Cameras, Crime, and Comcast: A Mt. Washington Year In Review

Submitted by Jonathan Cooper on January 2, 2010 – 2:27 amNo Comment

Now that 2009 has drawn to a close, we thought that it would be fun to take a look back through the archives and see what were the most popular Mount Washington Google Group topics throughout the year.  After collating, grouping, and sorting, we have what seems to be a reasonable arrangement of trending topics to represent the year.

  • #10: Tuffy Short

While this thread began as a warning to the neighborhood about keeping fox/pet interactions to a minimum, most of the banter in this thread revolved around comparing our neighborhood feral canine to Shaft. Photo: gingiber

  • #9: Dog Poop on UB Fields

This may have been one of the most dramatic discussions centered on dog feces that has ever graced anyone’s inbox.  We laughed.  We cried.  We held our noses.  In summary: please pick up after your dogs; if you forget a bag, borrow one; if you see someone “forget” to pick up after his or her dog, please speak to them in private and don’t call them out in a semi-public forum.  This thread also contained several original haiku about the topic. • #8: Leaf Sucking Pilot

While this thread didn’t technically start in 2009, it was regarding 2009 and ended in 2009.  In it, our neighborhood leaders tried to patiently and rationally explain the good news/bad news regarding the Baltimore City leaf sucking pilot program.  In order to test its new leaf sucking equipment, Mt. Washington was to be in a pilot program in which the City would resume vacuuming the leaves from our streets after a multi-year hiatus.  In January.

  • #7: Door-to-Door Magazine Scam

So if guy knocks on your door from Omni-Horizons selling magazine subscriptions to pay off his dentures and asking for snacks, drinks, tissues, and allergy medication, do not invite him in.  It’s a scam.

  • #6: Single Stream Recycling/One Plus One Pickup

We’d like to hear feedback from you on this one.  There was much initial concern from some neighbors that trash collection once per week would be insufficient and that some people have no place to store trash until the pickup day.  Others said that this would be a welcome change because recycling had been piling up.  It’s now been six months since the One Plus One program started.  How has it been treating you?  Leave a comment and let everyone know!

  • #5: “Help, I’m Stuck In This Trash Can”

Quite a lot was said about the man who called out for help after getting stuck in various trash cans on a semi-daily basis in March of 2009.  Is he dangerous?  Harmless?  A grouch?  The Grouch?  The world may never know. Photo: jiulliano

  • #4: Flu Vaccines

Only on the Mt. Washington Google Group could a heated discussion about the pros and cons of vaccination turn into just as heated a discussion about the pros and cons of being overly verbose in Group posts. Photo: samantha celera

  • #3: Comcast

May 2009: the month of the Great Router Reboot.  Everyone in the neighborhood was rebooting their equipment several times a day due to lost connectivity, yet Comcast could find nothing wrong.  Definitely not Comcastic.  There were well over 100 posts about this topic, making it one of the top three.

  • #2: Speed Cameras

I don’t want to spark a new round of debate about this, but, according to our calculations, with more than 150 posts, this was the most hotly contested issue on the Google Group for 2009.  The issue in these threads was putting speed cameras on Kelly Avenue in the 25 M.P.H. zone. • #1: Crime

I stopped counting after 200 posts, but the hottest topic on the Group in 2009 was crime.  From package theft to home break-ins to armed robbery, lots of crimes were reported, and hopefully some were averted.  These discussions spanned many threads throughout the year, but they were definitely a recurring theme. Most of the topics were during the summer months.  Have things gotten better as the weather has gotten colder?  Let us know in the comments! Photo: Arenamontanus
