Man Assaulted at Mt. Washington Light Rail Station

Submitted by on January 26, 2010 – 8:45 pm2 Comments

From WJZ:

A man was assaulted while walking near a busy light rail stop in northwest Baltimore.

It happened early Friday evening near the Mount Washington light rail stop near Smith Avenue.

Police say a man was walking from the light rail when he was attacked by two young men.

The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The two suspects remain at large.

Because the attack happened near a light rail stop, MTA Police are handling
the investigation.

Police are checking security video at the stop for possible clues.

The article says Friday, but we believe that this occurred today, as it was on today’s newscast as breaking news.  According to the video on the page, two juveniles attacked and robbed a man near the station and were seen running towards Falls Road.  The man was taken to Sinai with a laceration to the back of his head and is in good condition.  The suspects have not yet been apprehended.  If anyone has more information about this, please post it in the comments.  We will update you if we learn more.

Shame on you for leading readers to believe that this assault occurred at the Light rail station with your headline! While the mugging is a sad example of how vulnerable we all are; the mugging occurred when the victim was walking a secluded pathway beneath 83 and NOT at the lightrail station as stated in your headline. Way to instill fear in your readers and deter them from choosing public transportation. Shame on you.

While I certainly understand your sentiment, and while we do not intend to deter any readers from using public transportation, I would like to respond to clarify the headline. When we originally posted this article, the news was breaking and it was being reported as having taken place at the light rail station. The next day, when we were able to speak to the victim and get more information, a second article was posted that clarified that it occurred near the light rail station, but not on the light rail property. The second article makes clear that the path between the light rail and Mount Washington Mill was the location of the attack and goes into detail about what happened. I believe that all Mt. Washington residents are able to read these articles in the light of an unfolding news story and understand that we tried our best to relay the information as we received it – without any intention to frighten neighbors or deter them from enjoying the benefits of our neighborhood.
