More Information on Light Rail Mugging
We have more information about Tuesday evening’s assault and robbery near the Mt. Washington light rail stop. The victim, a Mt. Washington resident, shared the following harrowing tale:
Tuesday at about 5 p.m. I was walking on the path from the village / light rail to Mt. Washington Mill, where my office is located. All of a sudden I found myself on the ground with two assailants punching me and going through my pockets. They hit me from behind, never saw or heard anyone coming. I chased them up the stairs towards Mt. Washington Mill, where they ran towards Falls Rd, never to be seen again.
In a follow-up, I asked him how the police were notified, and he responded:
I chased the perps to Smith Ave., and was standing there when a passerby, in a car, stopped to offer assistance. He called 911.
Initial reports claimed that the MTA police were handling the investigation, but it now seems that the Baltimore City Police Department is handling the case. When asked how the police response has been, the victim told the Mt. Washington post:
As far as I could tell (remember I was in shock) response was pretty swift- a couple of minutes. Several cars and a helicopter. Our city council woman, Rikki Spector, has been in touch with the police department leadership and they have let her know they are on the job.
There have been detectives following up with me.
After I recover from the stitches in my elbow and head, and soreshoulder I will be physically OK, but I am very sad as well as angry.
I wonder if we should petition the police to put one of those security
cameras in that under-pass stretch.
Neighbors have shown an outpouring of sympathy and support, but they also share in his concern. There have been reports of assaults along the same path in the past year. The property on which the attack took place is owened by Baltimore City.
We are fortunate to live in one of the City’s safest neighborhoods, but incidents like this one remind us that low crime does not mean no crime. We should continue to be vigilant in trying to prevent crime and we need to work with the local authorities to keep violence off of our streets. Our city councilperson, Rikki Spector, can be contacted at Rikki.Spector@baltimorecity.gov if you would like to share your concerns about keeping Mt. Washington safe.
The suspects have not been located. If anyone has information about this crime, please contact Baltimore City Police.
