Support Mount Washington Elementary School!
Thank you to Cecilia Meisner for providing the following information about the upcoming Mount Washington Elementary School phonathon. Please take this opportunity to support the community by supporting our local school. Everyone in our neighborhood benefits from having a strong elementary school with valuable community support. A strong school helps the community keep its reputation as a place for families to live, maintains property values, and brings us an opportunity to strengthen how children learn and grow in our neighborhood:
Every year, parents, former parents, and even teachers at Mt. Washington Elementary School volunteer their time at the school’s annual phonathon. This year’s phonathon is scheduled for the evenings of February 10th and 11th, and once again, volunteers will be calling from the space generously donated by DLA Piper on Smith Avenue.
As you might expect, many donors are parents and grandparents of current MWES students, while others are parents of former MWES students. But you might be surprised to find out that a majority of the donors are community members and neighbors who don’t have children at the school. Why do they give? Because the school is one of our neighborhood’s gems, and it benefits all of us to have our school give children the best education possible. One of the reasons that Mt. Washington property values stay high year after year is because the availability of excellent public education draws families to the neighborhood.
Funds raised through the phonathon go toward many great initiatives at the school, ranging from purchasing library books to equipping the new science lab to providing for field trips and school-wide music and arts assemblies. Every year, the PTO also supports special initiatives such as the new stage curtains and sound system in the auditorium and the two-way radios to help with school dismissal that were purchased last school year. Please visit www.mtwashingtonelementary.com to learn more about our neighborhood school, which has been supported by the community since it was founded in 1867!
The goal for this year’s phonathon is $10,000, and $975 has already been raised from parents at the school who donated early to save volunteers a call! Despite the efforts of the volunteer callers, it is impossible to reach every Mt. Washington neighbor in only two evenings. If you would like to donate, you don’t need to wait for a call: you can send a check – in any amount! – made payable to MWES PTO to 1801 Sulgrave Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21209. The MWES PTO is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, and donations are fully tax-deductible as allowed by law. If you would prefer to remove your name from this year’s calling list or if you have any questions, please contact MWES Phonathon Chair and PTO Executive Board Member Cecilia Meisner.
