Joan Goldman sent us the following reminder from Baltimore Housing:

BALTIMORE HOUSING REMINDS OF KEEPING HVAC UNITS CLEAR

(Baltimore – February 5, 2010) As the Baltimore metropolitan region prepares for a severe winter storm, with near blizzard conditions, Baltimore Housing Commissioner Paul T. Graziano advises property owners, with heating systems or water heaters that vent directly to the outside, of the dangers of snow blocking HVAC systems exhaust and air intakes.

Property owners are urged to clear the snow (at least 3 feet) away from the exhaust and air intakes. HVAC units that are not kept clear could be in danger of complete system failure resulting in no heat, or worst case it can cause the flue gases to travel back into the house introducing Carbon Monoxide (CO) to the occupants.

Mayor Rawlings-Blake is encouraging all city residents to complete household preparations for the storm now. Preparedness information can be found at www.readysetgood.com.

For information and updates throughout the weekend, residents can log onto www.396snow.com or call the city’s snow line at 410-396-SNOW.
