Top 10 Reasons to Love Mt. Washington in the Snow
Like others throughout the neighborhood, we have had our highs and lows over the past few days in dealing with all of the snow. On the whole, I would say that the past week has reaffirmed for me why I love being a part of this neighborhood. Without further ado, our top ten reasons to love Mount Washington in the snow:
1. Neighbors coming together
We have been hearing stories of neighbors joining forces to help make life better for everyone. One group of neighbors tried for hours to free a stuck plow. Others have offered their homes to those without power or heat. Mt. Washington continued to be a tight-knit community with widespread kindness and generosity, especially when we could not leave our own streets.
2. Dump trucks!
3. Street shoveling block parties
Over the past week, many blocks have come together to clear by hand what giant machines could not. Twice.
4. Shopping services
With many residents snowbound, many of those who could free their cars and get out into the world have been offering their services to pick up and bring back food and other items that a person might need after nearly a week of being unable to shop for themselves.
5. Mystery snow blowers (and mysteries solved)
The residents of Roxbury Place banded together and dug the whole street out after Friday’s snowfall. When part two arrived, they readied themselves for more hard labor. As they were digging, a kind stranger used his snowblower to clear the road and would not accept any payment. That stranger was later identified as Miles Norin, who has been generously and tirelessly clearing driveways, sidewalks, roads, and cars for days. He told us that he knows that he can do in fifteen minutes with his snowblower what would take a neighbor three hours to do by hand.
6. Skiers
7. Fabulous photographers

8. Neighbors nominating others for awards
We received a nomination from Cecilia Meisner for a Quote of the Month award to go to David Nemerson for the following uplifting proclamation:
I just wanted to throw my support in with the shovel-brigade supporters. Government budgets are a mess at every level, from local to federal, and around the world. The infrastructure in this county is in a shambles. The situation ain’t likely to improve anytime soon. Throw into the equation the likelihood of ever more extreme weather in the years and decades to come, and I humbly suggest that individuals, families and communities that can embody a spirit of cheerful self-reliance will prosper, and those that stay inside and complain while listening to the busy signal on 311 will not. It has been an honor to be part of this great neighborhood these past few days and I look forward to the next round!
9. Front end loaders
10. Neighbors sending messages of sanity and hope
We received the following from neighbor John Hammond:
I thought I’d try to bring some sanity to the situation by sending along a comparison of our back yard from May 10, 2009 and February 10, 2010. Hopefully the May pic will bring back wonderful memories to get us through the next several days and weeks.
