Return to Normalcy?

On Friday, I was finally able to dig my car our and get to work. While driving through the neighborhood, it seemed like conditions in some areas were still fairly bad (my trip down Sulgrave could be described as harrowing at best).

Over the long weekend, our efforts to run some much needed errands were severely hampered by bulldozers and dump trucks, which seemed to be waiting in our path just over the crest of every hill.

The kids were home from school for the 12th day in a row on Tuesday, and the monotony of yet another snow day was beginning to get the better of us.

But then we got mail for the first time on Tuesday evening. And Baltimore City announced that trash collection would resume* (we were beginning to become more than a little concerned about the ratio of trash mass to human mass in our house). Those two events represented a bit of a turning point in my mind.

Looking around outside, the neighborhood seems mostly dug out, with pavement visible from curb to curb on many streets, thanks to the aforementioned bulldozers and dump trucks (albeit with five-foot walls of ice lining those streets).

The kids go back to school today, which, at least in our house, is just as exciting for the students as it is for the parents.

I haven’t yet traveled to other parts of the neighborhood, so tell us how you are faring. Other than an unprecedented amount of snow on our yards, are things pretty much back to normal now?

Do you feel like life has returned to normalcy?

*The Department of Public Works has asked that we place our trash cans/recycling bins for collection at the end of the nearest street or alley without blocking streets, alleys, or sidewalks.
