Park School Hosts

Free Screening of CHOPS,

Award-Winning Documentary

about High School Jazz Musicians

Friday, April 9 at 7pm

“Anyone who wonders why jazz and the movies are often called the quintessential American arts should check out Bruce Broder’s exhilarating documentary about high school jazz bands…”

– Michael Sragow, Baltimore Sun

‘The film is so well made, a labor of love…just the feeling of it, the soul of it all.’

-Wynton Marsalis, Artistic Director, Jazz at Lincoln Center

Park School will host a free screening of the acclaimed jazz documentary, CHOPS on Friday, April 9 at 7:00pm. CHOPS tells the story of a group of high school kids with extraordinary musical ability who learn to make the most of their gifts in a highly regarded public school jazz program in Jacksonville, FL.  The film follows their musical journey from Florida to New York City, where they compete against the top high school jazz bands in the nation at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s prestigious Essentially Ellington Competition and Festival.  Win or lose, the Essentially Ellington experience puts them at the threshold of their dream, and reveals the incredible growth they’ve experienced personally and musically.

When the film was shown at the Maryland Film Festival its director Jed Dietz said, “The final moments of the film are as thrilling as anything you’ll see on film this year.  Any doubts you might have had about the potential of American youth, the efficacy of arts funding, the practical power of music, are answered for good.  And, of course, the music is not to be believed.”

Director Bruce Broder will introduce the film and take questions afterwards.  DVDs of the film will be on sale and Broder will autograph copies. Admission is free.
