MWES / Shrine School Steering Committee Formed
A steering committee is being formed to prepare for a time in the future if the Archdiocese ultimately decides to make the current Shrine School building available for another use. The committee seeks to involve a wide representation of stakeholders. Below is David Conn’s announcement of the committee with information on how community members can become involved in the process.
MWES/Shrine School Steering Committee Formed
Tuesday, March 23, 2010 – Since the announcement that the Shrine of
the Sacred Heart School will close this June, a growing number of
school parents and other community members have asked about the
possibility of MWES obtaining use of the Shrine School building. The
Archdiocese of Baltimore’s first priority is the smooth transition of
its students, teachers and staff to a different educational setting.
We respect that need, and wish nothing but future success to all
individuals and families involved in that process. If the Archdiocese ultimately decides to make the Shrine School
building available, it is important that Mt. Washington Elementary
School parents, staff and neighborhood residents and businesses have
an opportunity to discuss the community’s interest in the building so
that an appropriate response can be formulated. To that end, MWES PTO President Gina Foringer, School Improvement Team
Chairperson Trude Cooke-Turner, MWES Principal Sue Torr, and Mt.
Washington Improvement Association (MWIA) President Aaron Meisner have
asked David Conn, an MWES parent and MWIA Board member, to convene an
ad hoc Steering Committee to begin exploring the community’s interest
in the Shrine School building. The independent Steering Committee will seek representation from a
broad array of community stakeholders, including neighborhood
residents with and without children at the school, parents from out of
zone, local businesses, MWES staff and others with specific expertise,
such as educational, legal, real estate management, etc.The Steering Committee will hold public meetings and seek the widest
possible range of community input. If you are interested in serving,
please submit your name for consideration to
shrinecommittee@mtwashingtonelementary.com, along with any information
about your expertise, or relevant stakeholder group you may represent.Even if you do not wish to serve on the Committee or a subcommittee,
your comments are wanted. Please send them to:
