Local Author Writes Cookbook With Local Recipes Using Local Ingredients
Rob Kasper wrote in the Baltimore Sun on Wednesday about a new cookbook by Maryland-based author Lucie Snodgrass. The book features recipes that Snodgrass coaxed from a variety of local cooks at Maryland institutions like Baugher’s Farm. Recipes are accompanied by photographs by Edwin Remsberg and essays by Snodgrass. What separates this cookbook from other crab cake compendiums is the real effort to highlight local sources for the ingredients.
The book, Dishing Up Maryland, sources ingredients from many producers that Mt. Washington residents may already find familiar. Vegetables can be procured from One Straw Farm, an organic grower in White Hall that comes to Mt. Washington for the Wednesday farmers market in the summer. One Straw Farm also has a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program that allows consumers to prepay for a share of produce each week for the whole season. Another ingredient source that neighbors will recognize is South Mountain Creamery — you have probably seen their trucks navigating our narrow streets each week as they deliver milk, cheese, meat, and bread to the white milk boxes on an increasing number of Mt. Washington front porches.
For those of you who frequent the Waverley and Downtown markets on Saturdays and Sundays, other names like FireFly Farms and Woolsey Farm will be familiar to you.

“I have always been interested in public policy, and I love cooking,” [Snodgrass] said. She said she wrote the book because “I realized that to get really fresh food you are going to have to support the family farm.” She said she hopes the book will draw attention to Maryland’s family farms and to spur their business. Some proceeds from the sale of the $20 book goes to Maryland’s Best, a Maryland Department of Agriculture program that promotes the purchase of locally grown products.
