Weekend Events at Cylburn

Cylburn Arboretum is hosting a bevy of free events this weekend Here’s a not-so-brief listing of activities (all event descriptions are from Cylburn’s website). Be sure to check the times and locations for each event, as not all of them are at Cylburn.
Herb Weekend Leakin Park
The Herb Festival at Leakin Park has three goals: 1) Educational – Introduce herbs and their uses to the community; 2) Bring attention to the virtues of the oft-maligned Leakin Park, site of the annual festival; 3) Generate funds to put in an herb garden and restore the chapel in the park; 4) Provide a venue for enterprising herbalists who were in many cases struggling to turn a hobby into a small business.

History Day at Cylburn
Coordinated by Cylburn Historian and Board Member, Pat Draisey. A “history day,” focusing on the fascinating history of the Cylburn property and the Tyson family and its business interests, will be presented on Saturday, May 29. Come and learn of the mining and shipping successes of Jesse Tyson, his marriage late in life to a beautiful 19 year old, and her many years of residence on the property. A history “tour” will begin at 11 AM. Registration in advance is encouraged; free and open to the public.

In the Garden Series
Take a stroll through Cylburn and follow the self-guided cell-phone tour. Pick your garden and listen to what the Cylburn experts have to say. This is a great way to become oriented to Cylburn Park! Pick up a map in the Vollmer Center and enjoy the day.

Birdwatching with Baltimore Birding Club
Join a member of the Baltimore Bird Club to bird watch on Cylburn grounds, weather permitting. Bring binoculars, if you have then and learn to identify birds. Meet at the Mansion’s front porch on Sunday mornings for easy birding in Cylburn’s gardens and urban forest. Beginning Birders Welcome. Expect to find a variety of migrant and resident birds. Cylburn Nature Museum
12-4 p.m. Every Sunday. Stop by the Nature Museum located in the Carriage House behind the mansion. Cylburn naturalists will be on hand to answer your questions. It is the perfect complement to the miles of trails that wind through Cylburn’s woodlands. Cylburn’s collections displayed in the museum include birds of Maryland, nests, eggs, fossils, sea shells, butterflies, rocks and minerals, field guides and art books. The exhibits are in an authentic setting characteristic of natural history museums of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Children love the interactive displays.

Guided Cylburn Tours- 12 noon and 2 p.m.
Join Cylburn docents for an hour long tour of the grounds. This is a great opportunity to be introduced to the wonders of Cylburn. Tours will leave the Vollmer Center at 12 noon and 2 p.m. Free.

Forestry Board will dedicate a Sweetbay Magnolia in memory of Adelaide Rackeman.

Maryland Horticulture Lecture: Distinctive Trees and Shrubs at Cylburn
Cylburn is home to a number of “champion” trees, meaning they are registered as the biggest specimens of species in the city or state. John Fitzpatrick, PhD., a renowned horticulturist who teaches at Morgan State University and Baltimore Community College in Dundalk, will lecture on these special trees and other outstanding trees on the Cylburn property. Free and open to the public, advance registration required. Call 410-367-2217 to register.
