Spring Bling Happy Hour for Playworks Baltimore

Submitted by Sarah Keogh on May 26, 2010 – 10:46 pmNo Comment

Mount Washington neighbor Jessica Kohnen Karaska is the Executive Director of Playworks Baltimore, an awesome organization that uses play during recess in the Baltimore City Public Schools with fantastic results including more physical activity among students, less bullying and better in-class focus (see below for more details about Playworks).  Jessica wants to let all of her Mount Washington neighbors know that Playworks Baltimore is going to be holding a Spring Bling Happy Hour on Thursday June 3rd from 6 pm – 9 pm at The Fieldhouse in Canton.  If you want to see Playworks Baltimore in action, you are in luck, because just one month later they will be bringing some of their fun directly to Mount Washington’s Spirit of Mount Washington parade (this year on July 3rd).

More about Playworks:

Playworks currently reaches close to 10,000 Baltimore students each day at 24 City Schools.

Data on the impact of the Playworks Baltimore program (collected through a staff survey of all participating schools) in the 2008 – 2009 school year shows the following highlights:

  • 93% of staff reported that more students are physically active during recess.
  • 87% of staff said that students use of conflict resolution strategies during recess increased.
  • 76% of staff reported that bullying at recess has decreased.
  • 78% of staff said that the transition time from recess to classroom instruction has decreased.
  • 71% of staff said that more students have on-task behavior in the classroom.
