Whole Foods Market Hosts Canned Food Drive In Support Of “Rockin’ Appalachian Mom” Project
Whole Foods wants us to get the word out about a charitable canned food drive that they are organizing for poverty-stricken families in Martin County, Kentucky, where, according to the 2000 Census, a third of families are living below the poverty line.
If you wish to donate canned food to the effort, you can place your donation in the large cans by the exit doors inside the store by June 11th.
Here are more details about the project direct from Whole Foods:
Joining forces with RAMP (Rockin’ Appalacian Mom Project) a non-profit organization dedicated to making a difference in the lives of poverty-stricken children and their families in the Appalachian region of the U.S, the canned food drive will collect non-perishable food items and the food will be distributed through the Homecoming Food Pantry, which serves 150+ families that live in this remote mountainous area.
On June 15, more than 70 volunteers from the Whole Foods Market Mid-Atlantic region will join RAMP in Inez, Kentucky to provide on-site support and donated supplies to the community. The volunteer team will build a one-acre community garden on the grounds of the Homecoming Food Pantry, complete with deer fencing and an irrigation system, as well as a large chicken coop to accommodate nesting boxes and chickens that will provide the community with fresh eggs. Throughout the day, the volunteers will conduct gardening workshops and healthy eating seminars with the local residents to educate them on beneficial gardening techniques and ways to utilize the produce from the garden to improve the community’s nutrition.
