Shrine School Concludes Final School Year
Friday marked the final day of school for students, faculty, and staff at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart Grade School. Financial problems have forced the Archdiocese of Baltimore to close the Shrine school and 12 other Catholic schools throughout the city.
Established in 1867, the kindergarten through eighth grade school had been a member of the Mt. Washington community for nearly 150 years. Its closing has proven to be an emotional time for those connected with the school.
“It’s very sad. It’s a collective grief, to be honest with you. It feels like a funeral,” Principal Marcy Pierorazio told WBAL TV.
While the Archdiocese has found placement in other Catholic schools for Shrine students, one parent indicated that many faculty members have not yet found jobs.
The building that housed the Shrine school will most likely continue to be used for education. The Archdiocese is now considering proposals, including one from Baltimore City that would expand Mt. Washington Elementary School into the space.
