Mt. Washington Excellence in Design Awards
Each year, the Mt. Washington Improvement Association (MWIA) presents Excellence in Design awards to recognize architectural and landscape enhancements within our community. Local architects and landscape architects judge the competition.
There are two types of awards given: honor and merit. The former is the top award, while the latter is given to entrants who the judges feel deserve recognition. The criteria for winning are design (aesthetics and function), commitment to the project and community, and green initiatives. This year’s judges were Lou Ghitland, Alexis Yemma, and Derek Gagne.
The first Merit Award was presented to David Nemerson and Cindy Freeman of Greenspring Avenue. Their project involved rebuilding the central portion of their century-old home. They used many green technologies in their construction, including solar panels, TimberSIL decking, and solar water heating.
The second Merit Award was presented to Marcia and Alan Pasarew of Ken Oak Road. The Pasarews had a dilapidated swimming pool that they considered to be nothing but a soupy mosquito breeding ground. Out of exasperation, they threw in a few goldfish and were delighted that the water cleared up and the fish ate the mosquitoes. They decided to go all the way and convert the pool into a fish pond.
The first Honor Award was presented to Rick and Laurie Kingsbury of Crest Road. Over the past fourteen years, the Kingsburys have developed a series of “outdoor rooms” that complement the home.
The second Honor Award was presented to Mike and Rebecca Bainum of Uffington Road for their first floor renovation and deck addition. The judges were impressed with the overall design, the creation of open, warm, bright spaces as well as the choice of colors and materials.
